Bactericidal Value of Chlorine and Iodine

چکیده

In the August number of the Indian Medical Gazette, Captain Windsor experimenting with iodine, found that it was lethal to cholera, typhoid and coli organisms in one minute, when present in the strength of 1 part in 260,000, and lethal to anthrax and Hay bacilli spores in the same time, but in the dilution of 1 part in 8,000. These experiments coincided with mine, as also did his chlorine value for typhoid, namely, 1 in 350,000. Captain Windsor concludes his article by remarking that many observers have determined the bacteriocidal powers of iodine and chlorine, but have always found lower germicidal values than the above, and concludes that broth cultures were used in the experiments. This is the important point, for as a matter of fact 1 in 17,000 is, I believe, generally considered to be the germicidal value of iodine and chlorine. My contention is, that if typhoid bacteria are immersed for one minute in a 1 in 260,000 solution of iodine, they die. Now if 1 c.c. of a broth culture be poured into 10 c.c. of a known solution of a disinfectant

Bactericidal effect of electrolyzed neutral water on bacteria isolated from infected root canals.

OBJECTIVE The purposes of this study were to examine the time-related changes in pH, oxidation-reduction potential, and concentration of chlorine of electrolyzed neutral water and to evaluate the bactericidal effect of electrolyzed neutral water against bacteria from infected root canals. STUDY DESIGN Various properties of electrolyzed neutral water--pH value, oxidation-reduction potential, a...

Removal of iodide from water by chlorination and subsequent adsorption on powdered activated carbon.

Chlorine oxidation followed by treatment with activated carbon was studied as a possible method for removing radioactive iodine from water. Chlorination time, chlorine dose, the presence of natural organic matter (NOM), the presence of bromide ion (Br⁻), and carbon particle size strongly affected iodine removal. Treatment with superfine powdered activated carbon (SPAC) after 10-min oxidation wi...

Comparison of chlorine, bromine, iodine as disinfectants for swimming pool water.

Studies on the germicidal activity of chlorine, bromine, and iodine were made by use of the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists official first action method for determining effectiveness of swimming pool water disinfectants. In this procedure, 0.3 ppm of available chlorine as chlorine gas has activity equivalent to 0.6 ppm of available chlorine in the buffered sodium hypochlorite cont...

Mechanisms of inactivation of poliovirus by chlorine dioxide and iodine.

Chlorine dioxide and iodine inactivated poliovirus more efficiently at pH 10.0 than at pH 6.0. Sedimentation analyses of viruses inactivated by chlorine dioxide and iodine at pH 10.9 showed that viral RNA separated from the capsids, resulting in the conversion of virions from 156S structures to 80S particles. The RNAs release from both chlorine dioxide- and iodine-inactivated viruses cosediment...

The Bactericidal Power of Nesfield's Method of Water Purification

I UNDERTOOK the following investigation at Lieutenant Nesfield's request, and although I found a bactericidal power for iodine on B. subtilis somewhat lower than that which he determined, yet the experiments afford strong evidence of the value of his processf for sterilizing water for surgical purposes and confirm all his other results:? 1. One tablet of mixed iodide and iodate of sodium weighi...
